AML Transaction Monitoring Implementations 🚀

I help regulated financial institutions implement and improve transaction monitoring systems and AML processes.

My work focuses on improving financial crime detection, optimizing monitoring workflows, and implementing AI detection models.

All consulting work is delivered fully remote across Europe.

Who I Work With

I Helped Organizations Achieve

Improve Monitoring Effectiveness

I help financial institutions improve transaction monitoring processes and operational effectiveness.

This includes optimizing workflows using AI, process mining, and automation tools such as Power Automate to reduce processing times and improve investigation efficiency.

I also support the introduction of Large Language Models (LLMs) and Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) to assist analysts with report writing, case documentation, and intelligence analysis.

From a risk management perspective, I ensure that risk appetite statements, SIRA (System Integrity Risk Assessments), and financial crime risks are correctly mapped to monitoring controls. Controls are designed and tested using structured methodologies to confirm that they effectively detect the intended risk.

Monitoring performance is supported with operational dashboards and monitoring metrics to track effectiveness and operational performance.

Reduce False Positives

Many monitoring frameworks generate high volumes of alerts that do not lead to suspicious activity reports.

I help institutions reduce false positives through structured monitoring optimization and model improvement.

This includes techniques such as:

  • alert backtesting and non-alerted transaction analysis

  • scenario tuning and threshold calibration

  • above-the-line and below-the-line testing

  • redesigning monitoring scenarios to better align with financial crime risks

Where AI models are used, I apply techniques such as feature engineering and feature swapping to improve model performance and reduce unnecessary alerts.

The objective is to improve detection quality while reducing operational workload for investigation teams.

Compliance, Governance and Responsible AI

All monitoring improvements must meet regulatory expectations and operate within a strong governance framework.

I support organizations in ensuring that financial crime monitoring systems and AI models are implemented in a compliant, transparent, and auditable way.

This includes:

  • AI governance aligned with the EU AI Act

  • model documentation and model lifecycle management

  • operational risk assessments and control documentation

  • data privacy and data governance reviews

I use platforms such as Oxethica to audit created AI models to ensure that transaction monitoring models follow the all the oversight frameworks.

The goal is to ensure that monitoring systems are effective, explainable, and fully aligned with regulatory requirements

Testimony

As co-Product Owners, Paul and I worked closely to translate business requirements into practical solutions. His ability to understand complex problems and turn them into effective strategies contributed to the success of our projects.

Remote-First Delivery Model

My work is delivered remote-first, allowing financial institutions across Europe and the UK to access specialized expertise in transaction monitoring and financial crime detection.

Projects are delivered through structured collaboration within your organization, often through secure environments such as virtual desktops or internal systems. This allows me to work directly within your existing technology and governance framework.

Each engagement is built around clear goals, defined deliverables, and structured timelines. We first define the objectives and expected outcomes, after which the work is delivered through agreed milestones.

Engagements are typically structured through a Master Services Agreement (MSA) and Statement of Work (SOW), clearly outlining the scope, deliverables, and timelines. Where required, Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs) can also be put in place.

Data security and privacy are taken seriously. Work is conducted in accordance with GDPR data handling requirements, either through secure virtual desktop environments or through approved company devices when required.

While the approach is remote-first, in-person collaboration is possible when needed, particularly for workshops or key project milestones within regions close to my base in the Netherlands or the UK.
